Common repairs by component

Septic tank

Tank-side repairs include replacing inlet or outlet baffles, installing or cleaning an effluent filter, repairing risers and lids, and addressing cracks or infiltration. A tank that has not been pumped on a sensible interval can allow solids to reach the drain field, which is how a maintenance problem turns into a replacement problem.

Distribution box

The distribution box splits effluent between trenches. When it settles, cracks or fills with solids, one part of the field takes most of the flow and fails early while the rest stays comparatively unused. This is one of the more worthwhile things to check before accepting a field replacement.

Effluent pump and controls

Systems that cannot rely on gravity use a pump to move effluent to the field. Pumps, floats, check valves, breakers and control panels all fail eventually. An alarm generally means liquid is rising above its normal level, and reducing water use in the home buys time.

Drain field

Field-side work ranges from clearing or repairing a specific line to adding trenches. Whether the field can be repaired at all depends on why it stopped accepting effluent.

Pipes and connections

The line from the house to the tank, and from the tank onward, can be blocked by roots, crushed by vehicle traffic or separated by settling. These faults often produce dramatic symptoms and comparatively modest repairs.

It depends on the work. Routine maintenance and minor component repairs are treated differently from work that changes or replaces part of the system. County Environmental Health departments administer these requirements locally, so confirm with the county where the property sits.

How often should a septic tank be pumped?

There is no single interval that fits every household. Pumping frequency depends on tank size, occupancy and water use, and an inspection that measures sludge and scum layers gives a far better answer than a rule of thumb.

Is repair always cheaper than replacement?

Usually, but not always worth it. Repeated repairs to a system at the end of its service life can add up to more than a planned replacement, which is why an inspection that establishes the field's actual condition matters.
